UltraMar FerryThe most common way for tourists to reach the island from Cancun is the UltraMar Ferry in Puerto Juarez. The UltraMar boats are ultra new and very comfortable. The generally run every half hour but during high season there are usually more boats running and they go as often as every 15 minutes from 5am to midnight. You can check out the ferry schedule and prices here ----> http://www.granpuerto.com.mx/
Magaña FerryThere is also Magaña Ferry in Puerto Juarez just up the street a bit. Magaña is the first ferry company and still runs its older wooden boats. I highly recommend taking tha Magaña boat at least once during the holiday season. The boats are always festively decorated and usually have Christmas music, you can almost always count on at least one passenger singing along. If you want a taste of Mexico and it´s folklore don´t miss the boat! The Magaña ferry is located in front of the Navy base in Puerto Juarez.

The Car FerryThe car ferry runs from Punta Sam about 6km north of Cancun. The car ferry is the only option for bringing a vehicle to the island. For passengers, the car ferry is cheaper than the other people ferrys. It is a bit slower and you could find yourself waiting a while for the cars and trucks to be loaded. I think the ride is worth the extra time (and the extra pinched pesos!) the car ferry takes a bit different route than the people ferrys and follows the length of the island from North Beach to the Isla Mujeres Naval Base where the car ferry landing is located.

The Car Ferry Landing on Isla Mujeres
I have to admit, I love taking the car ferry. I have yet to board the new car ferry, as of now it is still only running one time a day I believe at 1:00pm. The older boat has a wide open deck for passengers on top of the boat, with a little store that sells beer, instant coffee, sodas, chips, etc... I have grown to love the slower pace and the unexpected events that are part of life in Mexico, a trip on the car ferry doesn't disappoint!

The New Car Ferry
The new car ferry is a quicker trip and follows the same route. The seating area has more benches to better accommodate more passengers. During high tourist season I expect the new boat to be running more often.
